About Everglades Godfather
Preserving the Past. Protecting the Present. Inspiring the Future.
Everglades Godfather is a small storytelling site about the Florida Everglades: the wildlife, the water, the history and the people who have lived and worked in the River of Grass. We write for curious travelers, families planning a visit, students and anyone who wants to understand why this place matters.
Why we started it
There is only one Everglades. It is not a swamp to be drained or a backdrop for a quick photo. It is a slow-moving river, miles wide and inches deep, that supports alligators and crocodiles, wading birds, turtles, tree islands and some of the most important freshwater in Florida. Much of what people think they know about it is outdated or wrong. We want to help change that, one honest story at a time.
What you'll find here
- Wildlife – alligators, crocodiles, wading birds, turtles and the invasive species reshaping the ecosystem.
- History – Marjory Stoneman Douglas, the Tamiami Trail, the Miccosukee and Seminole people, the drainage era and the birth of Everglades National Park.
- Ecosystem – sawgrass, tree islands, the wet and dry seasons, and the restoration work happening today.
- Visiting – practical, honest advice for seeing the Everglades from the water.
How we write
Every article is researched against authoritative sources such as the National Park Service, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the U.S. Geological Survey, the South Florida Water Management District, university researchers and the tribes' own publications. We list our sources at the end of each article. Where the experts disagree or the numbers are uncertain, we say so instead of guessing. If you spot an error, please tell us and we will fix it.
Our motto
Preserve the History. Respect the Wildlife. Protect the Water. Tell the Stories. Defend the Legacy.
Who we are
Everglades Godfather is produced in Miami-Dade County by people who spend their days on the water west of Miami. The site is affiliated with Airboat In Everglades, a local airboat tour company on the Tamiami Trail, and that relationship is the reason you'll see tour information at the bottom of our pages. Our articles are written to inform, not to sell, and we do not accept payment to cover any topic.
